Boaters, paddlers and ocean enthusiasts are invited to kick off National Safe Boating Week at the 16th Annual Safe Boating Expo at Channel Islands Harbor. The free event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 at Harbor East Park.
Designed for both experienced boaters and those new to the water, the expo offers hands-on safety demonstrations, expert instruction and live rescue simulations that highlight the importance of preparedness while enjoying Ventura County’s waterways and the Channel Islands. The event also marks the first day of National Safe Boating Week, which runs May 16–22, 2026 and promotes responsible boating practices nationwide.
“The Safe Boating Expo is an important community event that reinforces the importance of safety on the water,” said Michael Tripp, director of the Ventura County Harbor Department. “The Harbor Department and our event partners remain committed to educating the public and promoting best practices that save lives. This expo is a great opportunity for boaters of all experience levels to learn, connect and ensure they’re prepared for a safe season on the water.”
A highlight of the event will be two separate live on-the-water search and rescue demonstrations conducted by the United States Coast Guard and then your Ventura County first responders, scheduled from 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. These demonstrations will feature helicopters, rescue crews and search and rescue vessels working together in simulated emergency scenarios, giving attendees an inside look at how first responders perform critical maritime rescues.
Throughout the day, visitors can watch from the bleachers and participate in a variety of safety demonstrations covering topics such as the proper use of fire extinguishers, LED safety flares, appropriate life jacket selection, first aid procedures, safe kayaking practices and scuba diving safety.
Guests will also have the rare opportunity to tour several public safety vessels that operate in local waters, including boats from the United States Coast Guard, Ventura County Harbor Patrol, National Park Service and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, among others. These tours provide a behind-the-scenes look at the specialized vessels and equipment used to protect boaters and respond to emergencies along the Ventura County coast.
In addition, attendees can participate in a “Life Jacket Exchange Program,” allowing families to trade in worn out life jacket for a properly sized replacement while supplies last. The event will also offer coupons for discounted LED safety flares, helping boaters upgrade to modern, environmentally friendly signaling devices.
Last, attendees can enter free raffles for prizes including whale watching trips from Island Packers, tickets to The Magic Castle, LED flare guns and a guided tour with lunch at the Port of Hueneme.
“Whether you’re a seasoned boater or new to life on the water, the Safe Boating Expo offers valuable information, engaging demonstrations and fun activities designed to help everyone stay safe while enjoying the ocean,” said Henry Goldman, Safe Boating Expo Co-Chairman.
