Looking for a new wine tasting adventure? When you think about award winning wineries, Oxnard might not have been the first city on your mind… but it should be! You might be surprised to learn that Oxnard is home to FOUR distinctive wineries and tasting rooms. Situated on the coast between LA and Santa Barbara, Oxnard is a fun wine weekend getaway.
Our Oxnard wine tour begins with Herzog Wine Cellars, the nation’s largest producer of kosher wines. Although Herzog is located in an unassuming industrial park, visitors are immediately greeted by the beautiful, soaring ceilings and elegantly designed interior. A visit to Herzog offers everything from wine tastings to Mediterranean-inspired kosher cuisine at Tierra Sur Restaurant. Curious about the wine-making process? Enjoy a self-guided tour where you can view the fermentation vats, wine aging barrels and the bottling process from the second story. Extras like cigars, chocolates, special events and winemaker’s dinners make Herzog a must-visit for every wine connoisseur. Herzog is open Sunday through Friday afternoons.
The award winning Magnavino Cellars is the next stop on your Oxnard wine tour. Magnavino was opened in 2008 as a labor of love by Robert and Barbara Wagner, who envisioned a commercial winery in Oxnard. Utilizing the latest technology, Magnavino produces several different varietals. At “Magnavino After Dark,” you can enjoy tastings on Friday evenings from 5:00 pm-8:00 pm. In addition to a glass of wine, the After Dark menu includes your choice from a variety of small plates, gourmet cheeses and salads. For the Magnavino wine lovers, join the wine club and attend exclusive members-only events with tastings, food and entertainment.
Heading downtown to the Oxnard Historic District, we find our next stop on the wine tour, Rancho Ventavo Cellars. Rancho Ventavo is situated in The Scarlett House in Heritage Square, a group of historic homes that is also a perfect location for an enjoyable wine tasting. Another award winning winery, Ventavo Cellars has been owned by George and Faye Gilpatrick for over 30 years and was inspired after the couple took several wine trips across the world. In 1998, the Gilpatricks decided to open their own winery with the help of their friend, Peter Nelson, and the rest is wine making history. The tasting room is open Friday – Sunday from 12:00 pm–5:00 pm.
If you’re looking for something edgy, try Oxnard’s newest winery, the award winning Strey Cellars. Owners Scott and Katie Ballew opened the cellar in 2014 and pride themselves on straying from the norm (thus the name “Strey”). The tasting room takes a cue from industrial roots with concrete counters, 18’ ceilings and cinder blocks. Zinfandel is Scott’s specialty, but Strey produces Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and many more varieties. Visit their website to learn more about tasting room hours.
In addition to wine tasting in Oxnard, you’ll find plenty of sunshine with mild temperatures, the only four diamond beach resort on the Central Coast, delightful restaurants and fun outdoor activities like visiting the Channel Islands National Park, paddleboarding, kayaking and more.
Oxnard is a great destination for your next wine tasting adventure and shouldn’t be missed!
