From a seafood restaurant that serves fish caught by a father-son team to a hoppin’ breakfast place that few people know about, foodies everywhere will rave about the food and service at these five restaurants in Oxnard.
All five of these restaurants are locally owned, offer authentic food and are considered hidden gems in the city.
Prepare your taste buds for a treat and check out these Oxnard restaurants:
1. Fishermen’s Catch
The father-son team that owns Fishermen’s Catch goes out each morning on their fishing boats to pull in fresh fish and seafood for the day. You’ll order from an all-seafood menu and can grab a seat indoors or out. Locals love their clam chowder, but the coconut shrimp and calamari sandwich are also favorites.
You won’t find overpriced seafood on the menu either. It’s all at reasonable prices and served in a casual setting.
2. Moqueca Brazilian Cuisine
If you’re looking for an authentic Brazilian meal, Moqueca Brazilian Restaurant should be your first stop. The food mimics that of a small Brazilian state, Espirito Santo, where the famous dish is moqueca. It’s a salt-water fish stew that’s cooked and served in a clay pot. You’ll find a variety of moquecas on the menu that vary based on the fish used. Moqueca has been named one of the top 25 Brazilian restaurants in the nation by Business Insider.
The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere and overlooks the Channel Islands Harbor, right on Harbor Boulevard.
3. Mrs. Olson’s
Considered by locals to be one of the favorite breakfast stops in Ventura County, the historic Mrs. Olson’s is situated in the Channel Islands Harbor with panoramic views of the water. As you dine on Mrs. Olson’s classic potatoes, pancakes, Chilaquiles and breakfast burrito, you can relax and watch paddle boarders and kayakers cruise by. Be sure to arrive early to get a spot on the sand patio and leave time to enjoy a walk around the marina. The restaurant is open daily from 7am-2pm.
4. CJ’s Barbeque
For true southern BBQ, foodies should check out CJ’s Barbeque. Owned by a local resident with ties to Mississippi, this barebeque joint offers a full menu of mouth-watering dishes. Since it’s hard to try them all, go for the $20 meat sampler with a side of corn bread. Everything on the menu is affordable, and you can even order family meals to feed a large group.
The restaurant, which is located on Victoria Avenue, has a down-home, low-key, get-bbq-sauce-on-your-face kind of feel to it.
5. Fresh and Fabulous Café
Located in the heart of downtown Oxnard, this hidden gem is a great place to grab lunch. The local owners have great gourmet sandwiches and paninis on the menu. The caprese panini and the Greek salad are particularly tasty. All of the soups are out-of-this-world too, as they’re made from scratch. Some of the recipes they use date back 80+ years.
The restaurant has a modern feel to it and gets a little busy around lunchtime as locals stop in during work breaks to grab a bite.
Whether you’re visiting Oxnard for a few days or a week, these five restaurants should be on your itinerary.
