Welcome to the sun show. Oxnard's fall colors aren't found in its foliage: they're found in the clouds. DYK? Fall is the best time of year for fiery sunsets, as the sun falls over the Channel Islands, making for brilliantly reflective waters that illuminate the sky with hot pinks and bright oranges that fade to a pastel purple hue. Perhaps this phenomenon is also attributable to the clarity of Oxnard's air during the fall season, since longer wavelength lights - reds and oranges - are more easily perceived by the eye in the absence of excess air molecules. Whatever the reason, the sky sure is pretty!
As the summer crowds recede, Oxnard becomes a haven for travelers seeking an even more serene experience at the beach and the harbor. Our ocean temperatures can reach 70°(F) and visibility can reach up to 100 feet, making it the best season to enjoy our beautiful waters. Many consider the fall to be the best time of year for snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and swimming. Kayakers can explore the beautiful waters, paddling along the picturesque shoreline, while stand-up paddleboarders glide through the channels, basking in the golden hues of autumn sun.
In the fall, Oxnard's coastal region comes alive with diverse wildlife. With fall bird migration season underway, visitors may spot a variety of seabirds, such as pelicans, seagulls, and cormorants, gracefully gliding above the Pacific Ocean. Visitors to the Channel Islands may see the island scrub-jay, a jaybird unique to the islands. Inland, in the wetland areas and nature reserves, lucky observers could catch glimpses of majestic great blue herons, snowy egrets, and vibrant ducks wading through the marshes. You may catch the end of the humpback whale’s migration season, and the beginning of northern elephant seals gathering at their rookery sites. Whether exploring the coastal habitats or venturing into the hinterlands, a fall visit to Oxnard promises encounters with a fascinating range of animals and wildlife, making it a nature lover's delight.
Explore one of our local Farmers Markets, such as the Downtown Oxnard Farmers Market, which is held every Thursday from 9 am to 1:30 pm. Here, visitors can sample fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season during the fall months, such as celery, cabbage, bell peppers and artichokes – be sure to catch them blooming if you can! You can also visit the Channel Islands Farmers Market open Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, where you can browse vendors, fishermen and farmers and their fresh produce and locally caught fish.
You can’t come to Oxnard without noticing the farmland throughout this coastal town. Oxnard is a hub for agriculture, and there are plenty of activities for tourists who are interested in exploring the region's farming heritage.
Explore the origins of the city built on sugar beets. The Oxnard Historic Farm Park Foundation is a nonprofit group dedicated to the preservation of the two oldest structures on the Oxnard Plain and creating a home for Oxnard history.
